With the impending arrival of a cruise ship at Squamish Terminals, the Squamish Streamkeepers had a brief window of the right tides to upgrade the herring spawning materials under the East Dock on Saturday afternoon, January 23. The 400 feet by 6 feet float line had been safely kept inside the Squamish Terminals storage area and was in great shape in spite of hatching out hundreds of millions of herring eggs last year. The float line was put out and damaged pilings wrappings were repaired by an enthusiastic crew consisting of Brad Ray, Ana Santos, Patrick Macnamara, Don Lawrence, Hugh Kerr, Scott Renyard, Trevor Dunn, Lyle Wood and Jonn Matsen.
Many thanks go to the Squamish Terminals for their support during this hectic run up to the Olympics. The velcro materials put on the West Dock concrete pilings last Spring were in great shape. If herring spawn successfully on these materials, this might be the best way to further expand the spawning area as little maintenance is necessary after application.
