B.C. Grizzly bear hunt about to begin, local bears worried PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alan Forsythe
Friday, 11 September 2009 16:01

Despite declining wildlife populations across the province it’s been decided the annual Grizzly bear hunt should nevertheless proceed.

“We came to the conclusion that there is no reason why environmental stewardship should get in the way of bagging a few trophy grizzlies,” said a spokesperson allegedly with the province.

Local bears are concerned and none more so than Bob, the Grizzly who made national news two summers ago when he wondered into downtown Squamish. The grizzly, who admits he is garbage addicted, but seeking help, has been on probation ever since. Now with the hunt back on he says he’s not even getting a chance from the province.

Written by Alan Forsythe

When completed it will be one of the few state of the art conference centre/exhibit spaces within a few hours drive to Vancouver, which according to Mayor Greg Gardner is an asset in short supply in scenic areas such as Squamish.

However until today’s announcement by the Minister of Heritage James Moore there was a question mark hanging over the long gestating and uncompleted Roundhouse at the West Coast Heritage Railway Park.

New liberal candidate for Sea to Sky Country PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alan Forsythe
Wednesday, 26 August 2009 08:16

With the possibility of a fall election looking more and more like a reality (perhaps we should all accept it’s now an annual event), the Liberal party of Canada is scrambling to find candidates for the 231 seats they don’t hold.

Surprisingly former Mulroney aide Daniel Veniez has stepped forward to carry the Liberal banner in Sea to Sky Country.

No word yet if former Squamish Mayor Ian Sutherland will contest the nomination, but as the clock clicks down no other nominees besides Veniez have expressed an interest in running for the Liberal nomination.

If green energy and climate change were not such serious issues, the BC Utilities Commission’s absurd plan to crank up Burrard Thermal might be worth a chuckle or two.  But climate change, and the need to find new sources of clean, renewable green energy, are no laughing matter.
The B.C. public have been rejecting dirty coal and gas-fired electricity sources like Burrard Thermal for many years now.  They’ve been clear that they want action on climate change.  They want to know the energy they’re using is the cleanest and greenest that it can possibly be.
By suggesting that Burrard Thermal is in any way a responsible energy option for B.C., the BC Utilities Commission has chosen to ignore the public’s climate change concerns and green energy expectations.  How the BC Utilities Commission could possibly have gotten things so wrong is truly mystifying.

Landowners Association ask: What is the construction industry worth to the District of Squamish? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Submitted
Friday, 14 August 2009 11:43
That is the question local landowners are asking council to consider as Kiewit prepares to wrap up their operations locally by the end of September 2009.
Over the past four years the Sea to Sky Highway Improvement Project has brought hundreds of high paying jobs, that includes flag people and laborers to engineers and administrative positions, to the Squamish area and pumped
millions into the local economy directly and indirectly. The project has also brought skilled professionals and trades people to Squamish who wish to stay and pursue their careers in the Corridor.
This begs the question - if construction jobs are unsustainable, then would we have been better off without the highway improvement project?
Obviously the answer, for myriad reasons, not the least of which being the economic benefits, is no.

To help showcase FireSmart preventative measures, the Squamish Emergency Program is facilitating FireSmarting of the North Vancouver Outdoor School (NVOS) in Paradise Valley.
The BC Forest Service (BCFS) Wildfire Management Branch will volunteer their services to prepare a portion of the NVOS property between now and September 6.  On September 6, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., the property will be on display to illustrate the techniques and impact of creating a FireSmart home.
All Squamish residents are invited to the event to see the ‘before and after’ and discuss Emergency Preparedness and Fire Prevention with Squamish Emergency Program (SEP), BCFS Wildfire Management Branch, and other community partners. SEP volunteers will host a barbecue, and burgers and soft drinks will be available to all who attend.
