On behalf of the one thousand individuals who formally expressed concern, and the many other cyclists, pedestrians and motorists who will benefit, The Squamish TrailSociety extends its sincere appreciation to District of Squamish staff and MunicipalCouncil for allocating the resources necessary to improve active transportation withinour community. The bicycle network plan submitted by Mr. Gottardi and accepted by council forinclusion in the 2009 budget, will allow cycling as a viable commuter option on our mainnorth-south route. This route connects 7 of our public schools with the major populationcentres. When gaps in the existing network are upgraded more people will be able toinclude cycling as transport mode to school, work, shopping and recreation destinations. Motorists and cyclists will appreciate fewer close encounters and stressful passingsituations. Pedestrians will have fewer surprise interactions with cyclists, when cyclists are traveling with the flow of traffic, as is the convention.
This is simply a strong statement of commitment to a move in the right direction for ourcommunity.
We now hope the Province steps in to make good on their public offering (BikeBCInfrastructure Partnership Program) and provide the matching funds that will permitSquamish to reach this alternative transportation goals a lot sooner.
I spoke at the SORCA all candidates meeting on the topic of a weightroom at Brennan Park. I believe that this idea is credible and overdue in our community. The area I am speaking about is between the gym and the lobby for the Ice Rink. I believe this area could be converted to a successful weightroom facility enhancing the financial position of the facility as a whole.
