You're Not Alone

I am writing this column from beautiful New Orleans where I am visiting for a 5 day leadership conference. Over 10,000 managers have converged on the city. Very Exciting.

Ever since I began my journey as a Life Coach I have been trying to come up with the right words to describe what it is all about. Unfortunately, it is not a tangible product that you can look at and touch and know what you are getting. When looking at the websites of fellow coaches, I usually don't resonate with what I am reading fully. The message often being given is that there is a need to become something more or something that I am not.

I think what coaching really gives you is an experience that helps you to gain an awareness of who you are already at your core. We get closer to this by shedding the layers of who we are not. Through experiences we can learn that some of the beliefs and values we have carried with us can be let go. As an example, what if when you were a child you had a teacher that told you that you would never have the ability to be a singer. This belief may stay with you as you grow older. As an adult you may be given an opportunity to sing. You are stuck in the belief that you can't and you decline. However, you may find new mentors that believe in you and support you and this belief helps you push through your fears. You discover that you can sing and you embrace this new reality. The truth is that you always were a singer, your beliefs didn't allow you to embrace this.

As a coach I become curious about my clients and help to bring awareness to the layers of the onion. We begin to peal back the layers and move you towards who you truly are at your core.

That said. I would love for you to share your questions and thoughts and share your experiences here in this column. Contribute your questions so that the column becomes more interactive. Together let's shed some layers of who you are not.
